His father, Masao Watanabe, is also a kokeshi artist, and Yuji was influenced by his father to make kokeshi dolls from an early age, and later devoted himself to creating them. His works in particular are so highly regarded that they won the Minister of Education's Encouragement Award at the National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition in 1978, and were permanently preserved at the Nuremberg Toy Museum in 1979.
