Bottom of the ninth inning in Game Seven of the 2019 World Series, Yan Gomes motions the signal to Daniel Hudson facing Michael Brantley with nobody on, two outs and a three-two count. It is the moment almost every baseball player dreams of being in. One out to go, one pitch to make history. Hudson kicks, delivers, Brantley swings. The ball meets the leather of Gomes' waiting glove behind home plate. The Nationals have done the impossible, winning four road games in the Fall Classic and remaining unbeaten in elimination games, they are champions of the world. "I was about to start throwing everything," said Gomes during our video interview. "I threw my mask first. Then, I'm about to throw my glove and I'm like, 'oh crap, the ball is still in there!' I grabbed the ball, put it in my back pocket then went out and celebrated. Yan Gomes, back with the Nationals on a two-year $10 million dollar contract, is keeping close tabs over that World Series clinching baseball he caught. "It's still in my glove," joked Gomes. An achievement that few will ever experience in their lives. Gomes himself continued to hold onto that dream when he joined the Nationals in 2019. The Brazilian born catcher has been setting milestones for his home country with every step he takes at the diamond. In 2012, he was the first Brazilian to play in Major League Baseball, debuting for the Toronto Blue Jays. Later in 2018, he became the first Brazilian to be named a MLB All-Star while catching for the Minnesota Twins in 2018. Now Gomes, who was born in Sao Paulo, is the first Brazilian-born player to be on a World Series winning team, catching the final out on a dastardly slider. "I had Pele tweet at me," said Gomes of the celebratory reception he got from notable Brazilians. "That was super cool. I sent that to my parents. They lost their mind. Both my brother and my dad are massive soccer fans and I am as well." The crazy part is, with how incredibly the Nats pulled off their improbable run from 19-31 to champions of baseball, Gomes anticipated it would end that way the moment they clinched a spot in the Fall Classic. Sean Doolittle famously described it as, "the most Nationals way to finish the season." "Myself and one of our batting practice guys, Ali Modami, we joked about that," said Gomes. "I think it was when we clinched to get into the playoffs to play the Brewers, it was like, 'dude, what if like Game Seven, World Series, you're in there and you catch strike three, what are you doing with the ball?' So, we kind of had it in the back of our mind." It also means he has a bit longer to stake his claim as the guy who caught the final out of the wildest World Series run in baseball's storied history. He has the ball to prove it.
