Description: In war-torn Antwerp of 1941, self-taught artist Carol Deutsch lovingly crafted a gift for his daughter Ingrid’s second birthday, an opus comprised of ninety-nine gouache paintings depicting Biblical narratives and protagonists. He created a large, meticulously crafted, wooden box adorned with a Star of David and a seven-branched menorah to hold the paintings. The box’s Hebrew and English inscription testified to its contents: a collection of biblical illustrations labored over by the artist Carol Deutsch during a period of 12 months between 1941 and 1942. Under the stressful conditions of curfew and persecution, the artist had produced an oeuvre that proudly affirmed his Jewish identity—a patrimony he devoted to his young daughter. Though the artist died in a concentration camp, his daughter and the paintings survived. This box contains 10 cards with prints of 10 of the paintings, plus envelopes.
