Description: American Line Type BookBorders and OrnamentsPrice-ListPrinting Machinery and Material1906 Boston, MA., American Type Founders Company, 1906. Hardcover. 1181 pages. Good antique condition. "A truly large specimen book issued by an American foundry that by the early 1920s had come to dominate the type market in the United States. Without question a rare and most important American type specimen book with a wealth of printing, design ideas, and a large section of printers' equipment. Used in print shops, copies were referenced for decades by printers with inky fingers, so clean copies are hard to find." (Quotes from the web site of CircuitousRoot.)Wear/soiling to boards and fraying to spine ends. Inside is remarkably clean. Hinges are good especially for a book of this weight and age. Dark maroon cloth boards and spine with black embossed lettering. Introductory pages are followed by (i) approximately1000 pages of type specimens, many of which are embellished with sample advertising design treatments, borders, ornaments, cast & electrotyped cuts, Chap-book cuts, U.S. emblems, Bill of fare cuts, Wood type specimens and much more and; (ii) approximately 181 pages of illustrated type cases, presses, and other equipment which would be needed at a printing press.CONDITION: Good, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges (uncommon in a book so stout and heavy), complete, the interior incredibly clean and bright; the corners bumped and rubbed. A few spots and soiling to the boards. Some wear to the head and tail of the spine. But even with its few faults still overall an outstanding example iconic specimen book. Book totals 1181 pages, measures approx. 10 5/8 x 6 3/4 x 3 inches, and weighs about 6 pounds 9 ounces.
