It features a pre to early War distinct OD Serge Wool Border and a mostly white thread back. The 44th was formed in the interwar years from the New York, New Jersey and Delaware National Guard. This patch was never sewn to a uniform. The 44th captured the father of our space program, Werner von Braun, and a group of German V2 Rocket scientists towards War's end. It is in good to excellent condition and at least 80 years old if not older. Early in the War 1 regiments was assigned to the Eastern Defense Command to defend New York City to Philadelphia. At the end of 1942 the Division was sent to the Western Defense Command. Over time it lost cadre and personnel as replacements to units going overseas. They first relieved the 79th Division in the Vosges Mountains. They cracked the Maginot Line, crossed the Danube and captured Werner Von Braun and a group of V2 rockets scientists. After light occupation duty then were shipped home for Pacific War Training in July. The War ended before they could deploy.
