The cloth lozenge of the Ruptured Duck was sewn into the right breast of a soldier's uniform and unofficially used as an identifier to various types of transportation companies who were offering free or discounted service to members of the military who were returning to the states. The cloth lozenge also allowed returning members of the military to continue to wear their uniforms for up to 30 days after being discharged. Due to service members not being allowed to posses civilian clothing during their tours because they might be labeled as spies by the opposing forces, many discharged veterans needed this time to readjust to their lives to pre-service conditions.
