After High School, Ruth taught school for a few years before entering nurses training at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, MO in 1934. She graduated in August of 1937. She joined the Red Cross right after Pearl Harbor, but then entered the Army Nurse Corp on March 25, 1942. She went to Fort Riley, Kansas and then to Camp Stoneman, California. She then was assigned to the 39th General Hospital in New Zealand and sent over to open and serve at the hospital. She also served in Guadalcanal, Guam, and lastly, Okinawa during the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Additional info: Cornwall Hospital was constructed in Cornwall Park, Auckland, New Zealand during World War II by the American Army and was named the 39th United States General Hospital. It accommodated casualties from the war in the Pacific. The 39th General Hospital opened on 4 February 1943 and consisted of 123 prefabricated buildings, 48 wards, clinic and surgery spaces, staff recreation halls and barracks. Over 1000 patients could be accommodated, and there were more than 60 doctors, 143 nurses and hundreds of auxiliary staff.
