All photos appear to have been taken by him or his friends, and very well could be one of a kind images. Some have stamps on their backs showing they were cleared by military censors, and others appear to have been developed in the U.S. after the war. Type & Size: A 3x4.5 original photograph. Condition: Good to fair condition. Some of these images have dented edges or missing corners from age and their prior life in a 1940s scrapbook. Please see photos. The photograph depicts a soldier standing on a path along the shore in Okinawa in August 1945. The soldier is wearing military-issued attire and appears to be surveying the landscape, which includes a rocky shoreline and the ocean in the background. This image captures a moment from the final months of World War II as American forces were securing the islands in the Pacific. Okinawa was critical during World War II due to its proximity to mainland Japan. The Battle of Okinawa, which occurred earlier in 1945, was one of the war's bloodiest battles with significant casualties on both sides. It played a crucial role in the strategy for a potential invasion of Japan. This time in history marked the transition towards the end of the conflict, leading up to Japan's eventual surrender following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The text on the back of the photograph states: "Herman Harris, Okinawa Aug. '45". Present in this photo: Herman Harris.
