CANADA: This new Fabre Line steamship (launched 1912 - 9,684 gross tons) on the Marseilles to New York service until the start of World War One, became a French Hospital Ship in August 1914. Six months after the War ended, she was refitted and resumed trans-Atlantic service on 15 May 1919. She arrived in New York on 2 June 1919, and the buff-color postcard (written that day) was serviced at 1 p.m. at the Bush Terminal post office in Brooklyn, New York. This was one of the two comic-design postcards produced by the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS organization for distribution to homecoming A.E.F. troops. Among the passengers on this first post-War voyage were members of A.E.F. Base Hospital #55, which was located at Toul, in north-east France. "Soldiers Mail" was printed inside the stamp box, a concession to the returning troops, who could mail the postcards without postage. S.S.
