Description: WWI TRENCH ART 40mmx140mm Rimmed Round Lamp 10.75" Tall Roses and Dimples Bottom of brass shell casing is on top of two dark wood daises, triangular pattern worked in brass around base, dimpled hammered background in brass, two high-relief roses created around center brass section, silver colored iron/steel head, brass cap screwed on top. We do not know the history of the soldier or veteran who made this lamp. We suspect it is from WWI because of the oxidation on the metal and the darkness of the wood and the style of Bakelite plug and cord and especially the rimmed (not grooved) bottom of the casing. This lamp was previously sold at auction in the Palm Springs California area. Total height is about 10-3/4". Wood base is about 6" in diameter.Silver-colored shell head is about 4-3/4" or 120mm in circumference (which translates to about 40mm diameter). A magnet will stick to it so it contains iron and/or steel.Brass casing is 5-1/2" tall (which is about 140mm) and about 130mm circumference at the base above the rim. The casing is rimmed, not grooved, and the casing is isodiametric near the mouth and is not chamfered with a shoulder to the degree of more modern rounds. (I'm sure that means something to those much more knowledgeable in armaments than we are). We cannot see the bottom of the casing identify further information such as which country's military this shell originated from. We are hesitant to try and disassemble the lamp to avoid damage and to avoid peeling off the old paper on the base. At the hole in the base paper we see a brass tube or pipe which the wiring runs over and up through the lamp. The maker did a nice job on the wood base. This is not ready to be plugged in to an electrical outlet. The original cord insulation wire is frayed and has exposed copper conductors. The plug does not have a cardboard shield. Top of lamp has bare exposed wires and no socket, it is just the base that holds a socket. The screw is present on the top piece. We can arrange for a local pickup if you are driving through Santa Clarita California and do not want to have it shipped. I've always kept an eye out for trench art and was excited to have come across this example. BR02
