WWI M1921 Summer Service Coat, 1st Cavalry Regt, 1st Cav Div• AAF TANK MUSEUM VA

Description: This uniform came from the AAF Tank museum in Danville Virginia. This along with several other items were purchased when the museum closed. I’m selling this uniform grouping because my 12 year old daughter, Allison has cancer. It’s a rare form of Leukemia that usually only affects elderly men. She’s been on some form of chemotherapy since she was diagnosed in 2021. We are fighting hard. Unfortunately, during Thanksgiving and Christmas she lost 10 pounds and became really weak. We are fighting this right now to see what the complications are. ********************************************************* This uniform came from the AAF Tank museum in Danville Virginia. This along with several other items were purchased when the museum closed. I have posted several patches from “The 1st Cavalry Division’s Shoulder Patch 1922-1934”. The head shape for the patch on this uniform matches these other patches posted. This patch is made of period Melton Wool, with evidence of aging AND mothing. This is obviously NOT a Kincaid tailor shop patch, but it does not mean that this patch wasn’t tailored at home, or some other tailor. The material is correct. It’s not modern nylon felt. There is true aging and it came from the AAF Tank Museum from Danville, Virginia. I posted a picture from the book of a 8th Cavalry patch where the patch is belonged to a known figure, but this is what the book says, “ This Type IV patch was worn by an officer assigned to the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2d Bde, 1st Cavalry Division, at Ft Bliss. Note that the shape of the horse head on the patch closely resembles the shape of the cutting edge of the horse head die shown in Figure 6. Perhaps this patch was the handiwork of Kincaid’s tailor shop sometime during the 30’s, but more importantly its workmanship and overall presentation is representative of LOCALLY MADE 1st Cavalry Division patches throughout the interwar period regardless of who made them and where.” Please note that this particular patch doesn’t have a clean line, or cut on the bend. It’s made of twill and wool and the “Kincaid-esque” horse head isn’t an exact match to the Kincaid Dies but this patch is real. It’s pretty easy to spot a fake once you have handled them enough. This uniform has provenance as being displayed at AAF TANK MUSEUM at Danville, VA., it’s aged, and the uniform looks right. Read my selling feedback. It’s 100% and this by itself isn’t easy. Thank you for your interest. For your consideration is this extremely rare US Army M1921 Olive Drab Officer Summer Service Coat; 1st Cavalry Regiment. 1st Cavalry Division SSI (1921-1934). Description: This is a pretty rare uniform type as it was only used from 1921-1924. This being said, the rarest aspect of this M1921 OD Officer Summer Service Coat is the 1st Cavalry Division SSI. This patch type was used from 1921-1934. This was a long period and you would expect loads of these patches to be available. They are not. There are very few that reach the marketplace that are real. Before you purchase any 1st Cavalry Division patch from this period it is best to get help, or do plenty of research. This is definitely a period piece. It’s made of Melton Wool. You can tell that it’s true melton wool in that the natural fibers that are like hairs all around the edges of the SSI. Reproduction pieces don’t have this. This particular patch has a particular patina that can’t be faked. There is also mothing on the upper right quadrant of the patch and this can’t be faked either. This is a privately tailored piece and not a QMC piece. The OD Summer Service Coat is a small size but large enough to fit on a sewing dummy. The olive drab tunic has a rich color and a true museum piece. The 1st Cavalry Regiment SSI (1921-1933) had a beautiful dark patina. There is a bullion WWI 6mn overseas service chevron on the left sleeve. There are sterling silver 1st Lieutenant coffin devices on each shoulder loop. The US collar devices are sewn onto the collar. The subdued Cavalry devices are both pin backed. There’s a simple WWI victory medal that’s in pretty good shape with a nicely intact ribbon. Patch Description: This is a 1st Cavalry Division SSI type that was used from 1921-1934 and This particular patch represents the 1st Cavalry Regiment and can only be from the period of 1921-1924. The patch is made of “Melton Wool” on “Melton Wool” with a Red Horse Head made of “Melton Wool” sewn onto a Yellow “Melton Wool” field with a Blue bend made of “Melton Wool”. The patch has light mothing on the blue bend and on the upper right quadrant. There is one dot that almost goes all the way through. That being said it’s a true museum piece. I truly hope that whoever purchases this keeps the patch original with the tunic. If you look to separate the patch please don’t purchase this. Thank you. 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division Patch History 1921-1934: This SSI was attached to the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade. 1st Cavalry Division from 1921-1934. The Red Horse Head denotes that this patch belonged to the 1st Bde, 1st Cavalry Division. The Red Horse Head with the Blue Bend belonged to the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. This gets confusing in that there was a 1st Cavalry Regiment & 2nd Cavalry Regiment for both the 1st Brigade & the 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. (The 1st Cavalry Regiment was noted as the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division and the 7th Cavalry Regiment was noted as the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.) Originally this patch was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade in 1921. The Cavalry Regiment that was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division was the 1st Cavalry Regiment that was established in 1833. The 1st Cavalry Regiment remained with the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division from 1921-1933. The 1st Cavalry Regiment was relieved from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division and assigned to the 7th Cavalry Brigade (mechanized). The 1st Cavalry Regiment was reorganized as the 1st Cavalry Regiment (Mechanized) on 16 January 1933. The 12th Cavalry Regiment took the place of the 1st Cavalry Regiment in 1933 for the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division and was assigned this patch type in 1933 as well. This particular patch with the Red Horse head, Blue Bend on Yellow field was replaced in 1934 because all 1st Cavalry Division patches were standardized. The new patch type is the one we know today. It’s the black horse head, black bend, yellow field. This patch type was adopted in 1934. 1921 Uniform: description A new pattern of service coat was prescribed by the 1921 regulations (AR 600-40) and the new specifications (AR 600-35). Bronze buttons were still worn with the service uniform and on the overcoat for enlisted men. The following except for AR 600-35 describes the new pattern service coats in detail: Coats. -a. Service (I) in general.— To be a single breasted sack coat of olive drab woolen or cotton material of adopted standard, easy over the chest and shoulders, but slightly fitted at the waist to conform to the figure without tightness. The breast to have an extra fullness of approximately 3.5”, according to the size of the wearer, above normal size. Buttoned down in the front with 5 regular coat buttons equally spaced, the lowest being placed slightly below the waistline as to show below the leather belt. The skirt is to be full and extended 2-3 inches below the crotch, according to the height of the wearer, with a slit in the back extending from the lower edge thereof to 3/4 the distance to the waistline. The front overlapping left edge of the coat to be cut with a slight flare below the lowest button to appear straight from the collar to bottom of coat, and to remain overlapped not less than 4” when in a standing position, without the use of hooks and eyes, the fullness necessary to accomplish the result being over the hips. Note: the main difference from the previous Army Regulations to the Model 1921 Service Coat is the shape of the pocket flaps for officers. They are to be more peaked and shoulder loops were made less triangular and more rectangular. The old shoulder loops measured 2” x 2” x 1”. The new shoulder loops for the M1921 Service Coats’ Shoulder Loops measure 2” x 2” x 1.5”. The coats also added belt hooks within the winter coats.
