Commissioned on November 24, 1942, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the cruiser played a vital role in key engagements against Japanese forces. Notably, it participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, providing crucial anti-aircraft support against Japanese air attacks. Additionally, the USS Santa Fe contributed to the Battle of Okinawa, offering protection to naval task forces and assisting ground forces during amphibious landings. Post-war, it undertook occupation duties in Japanese waters until its decommissioning on February 10, 1947. Throughout its service, the USS Santa Fe earned several battle stars for its commendable contributions. Despite being decommissioned, its wartime efforts significantly impacted the success of Allied operations in the Pacific theater, cementing its place in naval history.
