Description: This photo was acquired by us in a lot at auction from a large collector of antique military ephemera. All images in this set appear to be original to the era: either silver gelatin originals or images distributed to era press outlets. Type & Size: A 10.5x8" original photograph. Condition: Original to the era and in good to fair antique condition; may have missing portions, age wear, smudging, corners may have slight damage or some light creasing. Please see photos. This photograph captures a historic moment during World War II - the formal surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The image shows Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signing the Instrument of Surrender as others, including General Douglas MacArthur, watch closely. The background is filled with uniformed military personnel present to witness this pivotal event. The autograph of Admiral Nikita does appear to be genuine from our very inexpert comparison to known autographs. However, under a magnifier appears that it may be part of the image and thus an era-duplicate of an original autograph. It could be hand done with a marker though. Just wanted full disclosure on its uncertain origin! As a part of a press photo lot, a duplicate for 1940s press purposes would not be inconsistent. The event marked the end of World War II, leading to the cessation of hostilities and the beginning of efforts to rebuild and establish peace. The signing ceremony aboard the USS Missouri was attended by representatives from the Allied powers, including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union, among others. Visible text in the image includes "TOKYO BAY SURRENDER DAY - SEPT. 2, 1945 U.S.S. MISSOURI" written at the top left. Present in this photo: General Douglas MacArthur, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (signing), and numerous unidentified military personnel.
