Description: Historic WWII Seabag What a Perfect Christmas Present for your favorite WWII buff! Or what a marvelous visual aide for a great professor's lecture on the Pacific Theater. You favorite collector may already be familiar with the historic significance of this seabag. But if not, you will introduce your friend or relative to thee little studied importance of the seabag in WWII. It was not just a simple, utilitarian bag to haul and keep gear, but on those long sea voyages, creative sailors often used their artistic talents to keep track of where the sailor had been and where he was bound, or even his next expected battle. This WWII Seabag Tells the Story of the Pacific Theater through a seaman’s eyes If you should win this auction and receive this seabag in the mail soon after, I can tell you that you will hold WWII History in Your Hands. The original owner of this duffel bag, or “seabag” as they were called, stenciled every port of call his ship landed on. He recorded every invasion with a stenciled star. Further, he recorded downed Japanese planes with stencils of aircraft. This is so amazing I literally got chills examining this duffel bag. You can just feel the history in this otherwise ordinary OD green bag. It is amazing that this bag is in such great shape. Only one small hole that I can see. If you are a WWII history buff you will look at this, like I did, for hours and hours and show it to your friends and relatives. You will be holding an authentic relic that encapsulates the history of one man’s death defying journey to victory in the Pacific! After we realized what we had in this particular seabag, I got interested in googling to learn more. I came across a very interesting book by William J. Veigele, Ph.D, “Seabag of Memories” and became aware of how sailors often used their bags as a sort of diary of their time at sea. Just fascinating. I hope you will take some time to look at the photos of this bag. It is truly a treasure. I tried to locate the vet who kept track of the ports of call through stencils, stamps and stars. All the faraway places with strange sounding names, as the song goes, were recorded by this sailor who had such a wonderful way of designing the stencil placement so everything fit beautifully on this bag. He was truly an artist and an appreciator of his experience. Although he probably thought of it as just his own experiences, it truly is a historical document of that amazing time on the Pacific! From the very interesting book “Sea Bag of Memories: Images, Poems, Thoughts and Crafts of the Small Ship Sailors of World War II” by Wm J. Veigele, Ph.D., USNR (Ret}: THE SEA BAG When an enlisted man received his uniforms and other items in Boot Camp a salty Petty Officer tossed to him a canvas sack, a Sea Bag. From then on the sailor kept in it everything he owned. He lugged his Sea Bag with him to every station and ship. Mementos from those places where he served gathered in his Sea Bag. It became a storehouse for his memories of his service. Rummaging through his Sea Bag a sailor could trace his career, where he had been, ships on which he had sailed, actions in which he had taken part, and shipmates he would always remember. In that sense, the repository of his memories of his time in the naval service was his Sea Bag.
