Description: For sale is a set of Canadian WW1 medals comprising British War and Victory Medals named 784021 PTE A.E. BAVIDGE. 3-CAN. INF. They come with copies of service record extracts, picture and obituary.Albert Edward Bavidge was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England in 1896. Pre-Great War he had emigrated to Canada and was employed as a farm hand. He enlisted into the Canadian Over Seas Expeditionary Force on 18/12/1915 and after initial training was sent to England landing on 30/8/1916 for further training before being deployed to France on 28/11/1916.He marched into the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion on 3/12/1916.He injured his knee requiring hospital treatment in June 1917 for a month. On returning to his battalion, he was wounded in action for the 1st time receiving a gun shot wound to his chest, left arm and head on or about the 20/9/1917 at Ypres.The war diary records: At 9.45 p.m. enemy artillery opened up with an intense barrage of all calibres on front line and support system. Shortly after a party of the enemy was seen in front of his wire, and at 10.04 p.m. an S.O.S was sent up from our right flank. This was repeated from Brigade Observation Post, and our artillery at once opened up. The front line system and advanced posts were severely damaged. Major H.C. Wickens was killed while in charge of a portion of the front line garrison, Lieut. J.P. Crawford and Lieut. J.A. Clark were wounded. Lieut. K.C. Brooke was slightly wounded, but remained on duty, 10 Other Ranks were killed and 20 wounded, 1 O.R. Missing. At 10.15 p.m. enemy fire slackened and at 10.30 p.m. was practically Nil. A platoon from A Company was rushed up to front line to reinforce C Company. Weather – fine.He was evacuated to hospital only returning to the battalion on 23/2/1918. He was wounded again fort the second time on the 8/8/1918 during the successful attack at Morgemont Wood. He received a severe gunshot wound to his abdomen, left and right upper arms. His injuries were so severe he was believed to be dead when he was recovered at the end of the attack.The action cost the battalion 3 Officers Killed and 11 wounded. 29 men killed, 8 missing and 154 wounded. They captured 5 x 6.9 Howitzers, 2 x 4.2 Guns, 4 x 77Mm Guns and 450 prisoners. He was evacuated back to Canada where he succumbed to his wounds on 12/1/1920.
