Description: Original WW1 (1917) BRITISH INFANTRY TRENCH MAP. SHEET 20 SE 2 entitled "HOOGLEDE" (Scale 1:10,000) Edition 2AThis map was produced during the Battle of Passchendaele, and it covers an area behind the German frontline which was not considered to be in any immediate threat from the Allies.Trench corrections are to 11th September 1917 and the map shows the area to the North of "ROULERS" (ROESELARE) which features along the bottom margin. Rapid progress through this area to the Belgian coast had been one of the initial objectives of the Battle, until the weather complicated matters.Some of the German 'rear organisation' here includes an aerodrome, a supply dump and a large area of billeting huts. As the Battle evolved, the German presence here increased and a number of narrow gauge railway lines were installed to directly supply the frontline with ammunition from large 'magazines' stockpiled on the North East fringes of ROULERS. At the time of listing, I have the following edition of this map available which shows the result of this build up.The map was originally produced on unbacked paper and most likely retained officially, before it was later passed to the 'NATIONAL WAR MUSEUM" - hence their library stamp. The map also features several later 'Imperial War Museum' stamps with a catalogue number, and has been linen backed by their conservation department.This map is one of many acquired from a private collection which was previously purchased in 2002 from The Imperial War Museum. Each item was held in the museum's duplicate archives and deemed surplus. Almost all have IWM stock numbers or stamps etc and many have been linen backed for long term conservation and storage purposes. Significant numbers were unused surplus stock when originally transferred to the museum and have never even been folded. As such, many of these original WW1 maps are in 'time capsule' condition.POSTAGE - Will be sent using Royal Mail's Guaranteed Delivery by 1pm Service which will adequately cover the insurance cost of the item.
