Description: Limited Editions Club, 1993. Fine book in Fine clamshell case, complete with Monthly Letter. #122/300, illustrated with 15 lithographs by Balthus, who also wrote the afterword, and signed the colophon. Designed and printed by Michael and Winifred Bixler on custom, off-white, mould-made Arches paper, watermarked with Balthus' coat of arms. The page size is 12-3/4" x 16-1/2." Text set in 13-point Dante, with 24 and 36-point titling. Per the Monthly Letter, this type, designed by frequent LEC collaborator Giovanni Mardersteig, was chosen for "its combination of openness and strength." The 15 lithographs were printed by Bruce Porter from aluminum lithographic plates on Japanese paper, in brown-toned black ink, then mounted onto the Arches paper. Bound by John von Isakovics at the Jovonis Studio in full Morocco goatskin, dyed gray-green to match the Yorkshire moors. Clamshell case lined with matching suede, wrapped in matching cloth with Morocco spine label. The illustrations are inspired by a trip to Yorkshire Balthus made as a teenager in 1922. He did not begin illustrating the novel until 1933. The complete set of drawings published here for the first time with the novel. Only the first 15 chapters are illustrated, until Cathy's death. For the remaining 19 chapters, Balthus says in the afterword that he "wrestled in vain with the thorny problem of illustrating the subsequent events in a style that would not conflict with the preceding illustrations... but all my efforts proved futile." This is the only Bronte book that was published by the Limited Editions Club. 2nd book in the Fifty-fourth Series.
