Description: Vintage Wright and Ditson St.Andrews Driver Wood Club, Hickory shafted, with black calf-skin grip, 43" Length, RH, circa 1895 Fantastic Vintage Wood Club ! Wright and Ditson, A Boston company, was one of the US mass-producers of clubs towards the end of the hickory era and, on that basis, would not warrant a mention here were it not for the connection of the company with two of the pivotal figures in US golf. Firstly, the founder of the company, George Wright, who was a baseball player with the Washington Nationals, persuaded Albert Goodwill Spalding to abandon office life for professional sport and the rest, as they say, is history. He also played a part in bringing Harry Vardon over for the exhibition tour of 1900 but, from a Scottish perspective, it was the company's successful attempt to bring A H Findlay in, in 1899, to design a range of clubs which is of most interest.This great early persimmon wood club with black-resin-front-sole and lead backweight is as sensationally, as dramatically different from ordinary woods then.
