Description: Original woven silk portrait of Swiss General Henri Guisan (1874-1960), commander-in-chief of the Swiss Armed Forces during World War II. This commercially woven silk portrait is superbly executed & quite finely detailed. The work is certainly equal to the quality of a Stevensgraph silk. However, we do not know the name of the maker or the country that this silk was produced in. But, we feel confident to say that it was made in Europe or England. The initials which appear to be "LH" are located above his shoulder to the viewer's left. These are probably the designer's initials. There is a partial lettered marking at the bottom right edge of the border. This is probably the woven silk maker's name. But, we cannot read the bottom border marking. The silk measures 6 9/16 inches by 3 11/16 inches. The silk is complete with no missing elements. There are some minor creases at the top & bottom borders which could easily be ironed out by the buyer, if so desired. We will leave that option up to the buyer. There is slight wear at the top & bottom borders. There is a small line flaw in the material at the viewer's top right corner which occurred in the making. There is slight age toning at the top & bottom borders. Otherwise, the portrait section of the silk is in crisp near mint/mint condition as made. Apparently a very hard to find silk as we have been buying & selling woven silks for almost 50 years & have never seen any other example of this particular silk. Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value. This item is inventory #7526.
