Description: The August 17, 1943 issue of Highlights, a magazine produced by and for the military personnel at APO 953, Hickam Field on Oahu, Hawaii. Volume 1, #11. Complete, 16 pages including covers. Printed on glossy paper, staple-finish. Measures about 8 3/4" x 11 1/2". This issue includes intramural sports stories, photographs, cartoons, poetry, post gossip, a chaplain's page, and classified ads. Condition: The issue was originally folded horizontally and taped closed for mailing. The fold mark and tape on the back cover remain. There is a pen address and return address on the back cover, as well as a three-cent stamp. Check our other listings: we are also listing an issue of Hickam Highlights from May 1943 and an issue of APO 953 Highlights from July 1943 (APO 953 was the designation for Hickam Field during World War II -- APO 953 Highlights, Hickam Highlights, and Highlights appear to be the same publication). With this issue, Highlights changed its format to a twice-monthly publication on larger-size, glossy paper, complete with photography and typeset copy that was printed rather than mimeographed. The designation "APO 953" was dropped from the masthead. The mildly racy drawings of young ladies disappeared. Hickam Field on Oahu, Hawaii, later known as Hickam Air Force Base, was a U.S. Air Force installation, named in honor of aviation pioneer Lieutenant Colonel Horace Meek Hickam. The installation merged in 2010 with Naval Station Pearl Harbor to become part of the newly formed Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam. Hickam Field was completed and officially activated on September 15, 1938. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, its planes bombed and strafed Hickam to eliminate air opposition and prevent American aircraft from following them back to their aircraft carriers. Hickam suffered extensive damage and aircraft losses, with 189 people killed and 303 wounded. During World War II, the base became a major center for training pilots and assembling aircraft. It also served as the hub of the Pacific aerial network, supporting transient aircraft ferrying troops and supplies to—and evacuating wounded from—the forward areas. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
