Description: This is a calling card signed by the grandsonof the great English poet William Wordsworth. This grandson was also named William Wordsworth.He was born in 1835, and died in 1917. He wasa scholar and a poet himself, and is consideredto have been a pioneer in the field of educationin India, where he spent much of his life. He was in the Indian Educational Service in 1861. He served as Principal of Deccan College, located in the city of Bombay (now called Mumbai), from 1862 to 1873. He then served as Principal of Elphinstone College, also located in Bombay, for sixteen years, from 1874 to 1890. He was also the Sheriff of Bombay in 1886. He retired in 1890, and built a home on the island of Capri, in Italy, called Villa Wordsworth. The signature is on a 3.5" by 5" card that hasthe words "VILLA WORDSWORTH, CAPRI"printed near the top right corner. On the leftside of the card is an embossed emblem(see scans). The handwriting on the card reads as follows: Mr. Coddington Luisiana Hotel with Mr Wordsworth's compliments The card is glued to a brown piece of paper.Otherwise, it is in good condition, with moderate wear.
