Description: William Dorsey Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas (Unsigned) William Dorsey Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas (Unsigned) Click images to enlarge Description William Dorsey, abstract oil painting with heavy impasto, unsigned, 4 3/4 by 3 1/4 inches on a 6 by 4 3/4 inch piece of canvas, in new condition. I acquired the painting from a long-time personal friend of Dorsey who was also a painter who shared a studio with Dorsey in Ojai, California, and in addition was a dealer who sold Dorsey paintings for over a decade. He said that Dorsey occasionally would hang a large canvas on a wall, mark off a large number of small rectangles, and then fill each rectangle with an oil sketch like the one I am offering, cut out each image, and then put them away as potential sources for future paintings. Because they shared the studio, prior to cutting out the individual images, Dorsey would ask him for comments and he would write notes in the margins between the paintings. I acquired a small group of these paintings and am offering four for sale. There are written comments on two of these. I was also told the subject of each image and wrote the subject on the back of each canvas. They are fascinating. No one has seen them since they were put away after being painted.
