WILLIAM BROWNFIELD :: 1864 “Argos” PARIAN 7” PITCHER ENGLAND

Description: This antique pitcher was made by William Brownfield's pottery in Cobridge North Staffordshire England. The pattern is named Argos and according to the registration mark on the bottom of this pitcher it was registered in April of 1864. The Brownfield mark is a ring around the registration mark. They marked pieces in this way between 1850 and 1871. After 1871 the company became William Brownfield & Son(s). Thus this pitcher dates to between 1864, when the pattern was registered, and 1871, when the company name and trademark changed. Argos pattern features a Greek key band at the top. The body is encircled by stylized leaves inside pointed ovals. There is a small dot in between each oval. The leaf and oval design is repeated on the pour spout. The background color is a rich chocolate brown. The decoration is gleaming white. It is relief decoration that is raised slightly. The white applied handle is decorated with the same stylized leafs. There are small imperfections around the base shown in the second photo. This century & half year old pitcher is in very good condition overall. The combination of dark brown and white is very attractive and would look great with almost any decor. This beautiful pitcher would be a great piece to display on its own, use as a vase, or add to a collection. It could also still be used for its original purpose if desired.
