Description: Wilderness Empire: A Narrative signed by Allan Eckert (Hardcover, 1st) Wilderness Empire: A Narrative by Allan Eckert (signed) Published by Little, Brown First Edition, First Printing Description: This auction is for a beautiful first edition, first printing published in 1969. For over two hundred years no Indian force in America was so powerful and feared as the Iroquois League. Throughout two thirds of this continent, the cry of "The Iroquois are coming!" was enough to demoralize entire tribes. But these Iroquois occupied and controlled a vast wilderness empire which beckoned like a precious gem to foreign powers. France and England secured toeholds and suddenly each was claiming as its own this land of the Iroquois. Alliance with the Indians was the key; whichever power controlled them could destroy the other. Wilderness Empire is the gripping narrative of the eighteenth-century struggle of these two powers to win for themselves the allegiance of the Indians in a war for territorial dominance, yet without letting these Indians know that the prize of the war would be this very Iroquois land. It is the story of English strength hamstrung by incredible incompetence, of French power sapped by devastating corruption. It is the story of the English, Indian and French individuals whose lives intertwine in the greatest territorial struggle in American history--the French and Indian War.Wilderness Empire is the second in Eckert’s “The Winning of America” series. Hands down, my favorite historical writer of early American history. Few authors have the ability to bring historical characterics to life like Allan Eckert. If you like history written for the layman, or enjoy a good historical novel, you will love Allan Eckert. I can't recommend him enough. Condition: A beautiful copy, tight and crisp, with signs of prior use or wear. Binding - very good. Book is square, tight, and clean throughout with light wear. Dust jacket - Equally attractive clipped dust jacket is crisp and bright with no chipping, creasing or tears, and is protected by a clear mylar cover. Some rubbing to top front and rear of spine (see photo). If the condition description doesn't mention a remainder mark or ex-library markings, they do not exist. I am not a professional book seller. I have been collecting books for almost 40 years. It is now time to clear some space. I try my very best to provide an accurate and detailed description.
