Description: This beautiful and vintage Longma, handcrafted in Shanghai, would make a special statement piece in your home or office. If you enjoy Chinese history, this is a wonderful collector's piece. The artist of this piece was an expert at handwoven wicker as well as carving, and painting. The saddle on top opens up to reveal a hidden section. The Longma is an important symbol of success and wealth in Chinese culture. It combines two beloved animals - the horse and dragon. The horse represents speed and perseverance, and the dragon represents fertility. This special artwork has it's original identifying tag on the bottom. In excellent vintage condition, his body and head appear to be in pristine condition! I searched several times for any flaws. I took photos of the extremely small flaws (small ding in the red saddle, and 2 areas that may have existed when it was crafted - area on the hoof and tip of one horn). Please view all photos for condition. CARE: To maintain it's excellent condition dust with a soft dry brush and keep out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat. This could deteriorate it's structure and fade natural dyes over time. DIMENSIONS: 15" L X 14"H x 5" W - approximate and based on the widest and highest length. HISTORY: Shanghai handicrafts has it's origin in ancient China where bamboo was an important part of daily life and the first country in the world to use it in products. It was used for food, clothing, housing, books, instruments, and transportation. Over time and with emerging prosperity, animated Bamboo carving began. Lacquered wood, that has its origins in the Shang dynasty when lacquer was obtained from sumac, plays a key role in the creation of Chinese decorative objects such as wicker boxes.
