Description: Original etching of Whitby Harbour, created circa 1900.Depicting both the inner and outer harbours at Whitby as seen from the west cliff looking across to the Abbey. Of the numerous vessels, the most striking is a 16 gun Brig, which is being towed out of the harbour by a two man pilot boat. On the far right, the old four arched stone bridge can be seen, which dates this etching to before 1908, when it was replaced with the metal swing bridge.Unsigned - frustratingly, I have been unable to identify the artist, but they clearly have a highly accomplished hand. Etching, printed in black ink, on wove paper. In a simple mahogany print frame, with new, acid free, single mount and backing sheet. Plate size 17cm x 22.5cm, frame size 31.5cm x 33.5cm.Print in excellent original condition, a strong, fine impression with deep blacks, some light age toning to the sheet - see photos. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is on the Yorkshire Coast at the mouth of the River Esk. It has a maritime, mineral and tourist economy. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship and, coincidentally, where his first vessel to explore the Southern Ocean, HMS Endeavour, was built. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Whitby jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
