A U.S. representative from New York (1833-35, 1837-43), Fillmore was elected (1848) vice president on the Whig Party ticket with Zachary Taylor. Succeeding to the presidency on Taylor's death, Fillmore signed the Compromise Of 1850 and tried to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. He emphasized nonintervention in foreign disputes and signed a treaty opening Japan to Western commerce. Fillmore unsuccessfully strove to make the Whigs a national party, in order to conciliate the sectional struggle. In 1856 he was the presidential candidate of the Know-Nothing Movement, which tried vainly to unite the North and South. SIZE: Image size in inches is 5 1/2" x 7 1/2", overall page size is 7" x 10".
