One of the most interesting and entertaining aspects of his book is an account of wartime journeys in the Irish Republic, and his deep affection for Ireland will attract Irish readers both north and south of the border.----------- The seventh child of Irish parents, Bob Sheridan was born in Catford, London and there attended St Dunstan' s College. An enthusiastic sportsman and member of the Officers Training Corps, he enlisted in the Territorial Army – the London Rifle Brigade before the outbreak of war – and spent most of the next seven years as a soldier and officer.----------------------- He was commissioned into the Royal Ulster Rifles and subsequently, as an officer of the 6th Airborne Division, took part in the D-Day glider landings of 6th June 1944. He was later transferred to the Parachute Regiment, taking command of a company in the 2nd Battalion.
