Description: Offered here is a curious Wedgwood Jug / Pitcher in creamware / Queen’s Ware with red-printed etching of a cotton gin scene on one side and the quote “This is no HUMBUG” on the other. Research has not revealed the connection between Eli Whitney’s cotton gin invention of 1793 and the quote uttered by Dr. John Collins Warren, founder of Mass General Hospital, in 1846 upon the first use of ether anesthetics in surgery. The word humbug is described as ‘something designed to deceive and mislead’. If someone reading this has any clue of the connection between the two vignettes on this pitcher, please let me know. Meanwhile a great example of historical significance. It measures 6 1/2” high x 6 1/2” from spout to handle, and made c1960 is in superior condition – no chips, cracks, nor crazing. See photo for printed and impressed Wedgwood made in England marks; and also of etching as posted in several journals.
