It is a historical account of the Cuban War of Independence from Spain, written by Gonzalo de Quesada (Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Cuba in Washington DC) and author Henry Davenport Northtrop. It is subtitled A Complete Record of Spanish Tyranny and Oppression; Scenes of Violence and Bloodshed; Frequent Uprisings of a Gallant and Long Suffering People; Revolutions of 1868, '95 - ’96. It is an account of the events leading up to the war including the political and social climate in Cuba during the late 19th century, as well as detailed analysis of the major battles and military strategies used by the Cuban rebels and the Spanish army and the role of the United States in the conflict. There are also chapters on the manners and customs of the island of Cuba, its agriculture (sugar, pineapples, cigars) and rural life, and the inhumane treatment of American citizens. The 1-⅝ inch thick, 6-½ x 8-¼ inch hardcover book has 592 pages and is illustrated with battle scenes of “Cuban Patriots”, the harbor of Havana, Morro Castle, Cuban insurgents cooking a pig, the Cuban coat of arms, a bull fight, tobacco plantation, street scenes in Havana, and much more.
