Description: An absolutely gorgeous late Victorian New Edition of The Compleat Angler by Izaak Walton, a classic piece of nature writing and a must-have for any fishing and angling enthusiast. This edition features an introduction by Andrew Lang, the Scottish writer and collector of folk tales made famous by his Fairy Book series, and illustrations by legendary British artist Edmund J. Sullivan. This is a wonderful item, marrying together three iconic creatives from across generations. Externally, there are one or two marks to the boards. The edges, corners, hinges and spine show some signs of wear, and the block edge is slightly tanned. The spine ends are lightly pulled. Internally, an ink name has been added to the pastedown, and preliminary pages are foxed. Front board is a little wobbly from a small split at the bottom, the back board gutter is split but more solid. The price reflects these features. All text is clear and bright, and all illustrations are bold and beautiful. Binding is not the tightest but holding strong. This is just a sign that the book has been loved! The outer binding of this book is stunning; the moss green canvas is highlighted liberally with gold in a classic art nouveau design, featuring pond plants and three sweet fish to the front board, accompanied by delicate gilt titles to the spine and two further small fish. The font style feels personal, almost handwritten. An attractive book looking for the perfect home. 319pgs. 19x13cm.
