DILLINGHAM - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED 03/01/1946 - HFSID 141975 WALTER F. DILLINGHAM The Baron of Hawaii industry pens this note to famed cabaret performer Hildegarde Autograph Note Signed: “Hildy has a permanent/ invitation to visit Honolulu/ (the Hawaiian Islands) from/ Walter and [name difficult to decipher] Dillingham” 9x4. March 1, 1946. Walter Francis Dillingham (1875-1963) was a businessman and industrialist. A shrewd negotiator, he was able to gain favors from Hawaii politicians that helped him develop urban Honolulu. Dillingham came from a wealthy family; his father Benjamin was the founder of the Oahu Railway and Land Company. In the early 1920s, Dillingham drained the wetlands of Waikk and built the Hawaii Convention Center. A member on several different government commissions for the Territory of Hawaii, Dillingham was well known for several controversial maneuvers: During the Oahu Sugar Strike of 1920, he was chair of the Hawaii Emergency Labor Commission, and he worked to suppress Japanese-Hawaiian plantation workers' efforts to secure better labor conditions. Then, following the Massie Trial of 1933, Dillingham made some off-color remarks that contributed to a state of unrest, ultimately leading to the death of one man and the brutal beating of another. Although he ran as a Republican for Senate in 1962 and for lieutenant governor in 1974, he ended up losing both elections. Signers on verso merit further research. Notes on both front and verso are addressed to Hildegarde, the beloved cabaret singer who reached the height of her popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. Lightly toned. Left edge irregular from being torn from album. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: WALTER F. DILLINGHAM See more listings in our BUSINESS & FINANCE (1,121) category.
