Description: Photograph of the Albert Pike Memorial Temple After the San Francisco Earthquake Author: Street, W.J. Title: Photograph of the Albert Pike Memorial Temple After the San Francisco Earthquake Publication: San Francisco: Street, W.J., 1906 Description: Photograph. Very Good. 15 x 20.5 cm (6 x 8 1/8 in.) Original silver gelatin photograph. Light nicking/chipping to edges, with some silvering toward edges of photograph. Contemporary inscription in black ink ("Result of earthquake. April 18/1906-) with "San Francisco" written in blue ballpoint underneath at a later date. Pencilled notation (30-1) on verso of photograph. Although the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake was documented in photos by many, W.J. Street is one of the few professional photographers that took to the streets with his camera. One in a series of his images of the aftermath, this photograph focuses on the Albert Pike Memorial Temple, with the Temple Beth Israel to the left. After the Scottish Rite had invested over $100,000 in the construction and outfitting of the building on Geary Street, the temple was dedicated in February of 1905. The building was rebuilt, and remained in use as a Scottish Rite temple until the 1960s. The temple was eventually purchased in 1971 by Reverend Jim Jones, becoming the headquarters of the Peoples Temple. After the mass suicide in Jonestown in 1978, the temple was shuttered. After sustaining damage from the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, the temple was demolished, and a post office was built on the property. Only one copy known to be held by an institution (San Francisco Public Library).
