Description: This Vintage Rare ICARO Rodi Iznik Ceramic Vase was made in the 1930’s by Italian ceramicists in the occupied island of Rhodes, which is now part of Greece. ICARO is an acronym for ‘Industrie Ceramiche Artestiche Rodio Orientali ‘ this ceramic industry began in 1929 when two Italians by the name of ‘Luigi de Lerma and Dario Poppi’ left Italy to help with the factory in Rhodes and dominate with a new Dodecanese island ceramic industry . They had a fascination for the beautiful Iznik Ottoman Empire tiles , whereby they replicate this famous ceramic pottery from the 16th and 17th Centuries. Iznik is a combination of traditional Ottoman arabesque patterns and the rich and bejewelled colours of Chinese Chinoiserie. This small but beautiful posey vase has the glorious colours of a copper red, Mediterranean blue and Turquoise Green over a glossy all white background of the vase. The three floral depictions I believe are a Carnation,Viola and a tulip which are prevalent in the Iznik patterns. These patterns are found in the Icaro Rodi Iznik designs which were made C1930 , this pattern on the vase is a rare find. ICARO RODI is the original spelling of the earlier pottery , which makes this piece rarer as the spelling became different in the later years when the factory changed hands back to its new Greek owner when the island was no longer occupied and Rhodes was returned to Greece, The vase is in excellent condition for its vintage and there are no major flaws,chips,cracks.crazing,breakages and repairs. There is slight wear and tear on the base of the vase commensurate with its age, however this is not a detriment to its aesthetic.
