Description: This is a beautiful leatherette and top-handled Style 41C Gerstner Machinist Tool Chest. This is as functional as it is stylish in its design as you’ll ever find with the best known US name in machinist and fine tool chests, Gerstner. This example is really in good shape for its age believed to be from the 1950’s or earlier. The leatherette is in good shape, but could benefit from a dye and sealer/conditioner-but is just fine as it sits showing it’s age and signs of being used. The wooden structure of the box is fully sound and shows great age and color. The keyed lock is original but is missing the key, available from Gerstner (Code A50M47). The plunger/pins that secure the front cover work exactly as intended to keep the cover in place when the lid is closed. The top carry handle-is very sturdy and can be carried just fine while empty. The leather on the handle is obviously showing it’s age with some dry cracking and separation. All the original hardware on the box is showing it’s age with great nickeled patina and some areas of light corrosion. This box will serve the next loving home/owner as well as it did me and those before me. The classic style and actual beauty of these tools chests is really unmatched. I will carefully ship this box from my home in Union Grove, Wi to anywhere in the lower 48 for free with appropriate insurance. If you have any questions please ask! I am here to sell these beautiful vintage items and not to just show them off. If you have a reasonable offer to make separate of what my asking price is please feel free to contact me and ask about it as I will not be offended. If you’re a local buyer I will be glad to meet with you or arrange an in person delivery or pickup between the Chicago/Milwaukee areas. I’ve taken the following info directly from Gerstners website for your viewing. Common Woods Used: Oak, Walnut, and Black Leatherette (41C only). Chest Dimensions: 20" wide x 12-1/4" tall x 9-1/2" deep Chest Description: The Gerstner Style 41 is one of the most recognized and copied tool chest designs that Gerstner has ever made. Chest Additional Info: All 3 models had the same 7 drawer layout, with 2 half-width drawers on the left, 3 half-width on the right and 2 full-width drawers. The original design of the chest has the front lid (door) with a lock which locked directly to the opening top. The early chests didn't use the spring loaded pins to hold the front lid closed. The 1914 catalog mentions that the mortised lock on the front lid had 144 changes. The catalog also mentions that the case was strictly high grade in workmanship, material and design, and not to be compared with the cheaper imitations on the market. We added the 4th model, the Style 41C in 1918, which had Dimensions of: Style 41C - 20" wide x 12-1/4" tall x 9-1/2" deep. We had also changed the design of the chest to start using the spring loaded pins to hold the front lid closed. In 1930 the listing changed in the Gerstner Catalog to show both Art Leather and Quartered Oak options available for the exterior of the chest. Any further questions or photos needed-please ask. (Also a direct sale outside the site will help a buyer avoid taxes—as if we need to be paying anymore than we already do…)
