Brief History of Brandywine College Brandywine College was founded on July 30, 1965 by a group of educators and civic leaders who saw the need for an additional school of higher education in the Wilmington, DE and southeastern Pennsylvania region. Brandywine College opened its doors in September 1966, ushering in the first class of 576 students who would pursue two years of study toward an Associate’s Degree. In fact, the college received a charter from the state of Delaware that granting it permission to award Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees. In 1971-2, Brandywine College received full accreditation from Middle States Association and approval from the Delaware State Department of Public Instruction. In 1976, after a careful negotiations and planning, Brandywine College merged with Widener College, putting both institutions under a single Board of Trustees and President. Brandywine still remained an independent two-year institution that continued to operate under the original charter. A year earlier, Widener College merged with the Delaware Law School and the affiliation with Brandywine College paved the way for the Law School to relocate on the Brandywine Campus. The affiliation also provided a direct transfer agreement with Widener College, allowing Brandywine students the opportunity to transfer to Widener and pursue a bachelor’s degree in two years. In 1981, the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, located on the Delaware Campus, was organized as Widener University’s newest college. Only 8 years later, this college moved to its permanent home on the Chester Campus. As a result of declining interest in two-year institutions and the need to expand the Law School, Brandywine College graduated its last class in 1991. Around 200 students from Brandywine entered Widener University for the Fall 1991 semester and were offered the opportunity to pursue four-year degrees.
