VTG 1950 Western Germany, Hand Made, Hand Painted SANTA FIGURE 7" TALL 4.5" WIDE

Description: This listing is for a hand made, hand painted wooden standing plaque from Germany. He is attributed to HellerKunst, but could also be MertensKunst or RaviKunst. All three German artists were the most prolific in the 1950s to 1970s, when this piece was created. It is only marked (poorly) West Germany on the bottom, and it does have a small apple which could be a logo. I tried to research the apple as a logo, but that was pretty futile. In researching, I found that these fairy tale wall plaques and hand painted flat wood figures were a complete art form in Germany, most being made between 1930 and 1970. These fairy tale wall hangings and Christmas pieces (candle holders, figures all featuring hand painted flat wood) were made for the most part by 3 artists - Mertens, Heller and Ravi Kunst. I assume they are brothers? This fellow is designed as a Victorian Santa. He can function as a wall plaque, if you prefer, or stand on his wooden stand. He dates somewhere between 1950 and 1970. This type of flat figure with a stand has been a staple of German toymaking since the 1800's. They created all kinds of farm and ark sets that had lots of figures that were flat, hand painted, on these same type of stands. This one is really well done - the painted details are just wonderful. The back is darkened with age. This piece is made from either inexpensive wood, or plywood. I can't really tell. The base is a bit higher quality wood than the figure. The detail on the painting is superb, and in great condition. There is a lot of discoloration on the back, but none on the front. The paint has slightly "chalked" (where it starts to deteriorate and becomes chalky". Overall he is a great piece in gorgeous vintage condition; flaws are age related. I have a set of marked HellerKunst wall figures for sale in another listing. They are slightly different, and a slightly different style, which makes me think this fellow is Ravi or Merten. He is so beautiful, and truly won't disappoint.
