Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins, it is time to move my collection along to new homes. Here is an interesting piece of history and a good example of this type - a design issued from 330-346 AD by Constantine I (the Great) and his two sons, celebrating the foundation of Constantinople as the new capital of the Empire, and commemorating the traditional position of Rome as the cultural and moral center of the Empire. This imperial bronze follis is18mm in diameter and has toned to a classic medium bronze with green patina. The obverse features a helmeted bust left of ROMA in imperial mantle and the full legend in Latin, "VRBS ROMA." The reverse depicts the classic "founding" story of Rome with the She Wolf suckling the twin brothers Romulus and Remus with a dot on her shoulder and two stars above. This one was minted in Siscia and is referenced in RIC VII Siscia 240 var. I often get question as to which websites I recommend for research and while there are several good ones out there, I particularly like Wildwinds.com and numismatics.org and also forumancientcoins.com. I have been asked what could these type coins buy in Roman days? As inflation continued to increase during this time period, one of these would buy enough bread for one day for a family or one liter of common wine so these type coins were used frequently for daily needs. I am offering this one at a very good price so that my collection does not wind up in my “estate sale” and as everything needs to find a new home, am providing FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
