Description: [THOMAS EDISON] STERLING, GEORGE. A volume from the library of Thomas Edison, gifted and signed by the celebrated American poet and playwright George Sterling. The Caged Eagle and Other Poems. First Edition. San Francisco: A.M. Robertson, 1916. Hardback, 7.75” by 5.5”, 168 pages. Signed and inscribed by Sterling on the front free endpaper in black ink: “For Thomas A. Edison, with deepest respect, George Sterling. San Francisco, July 15th, 1916.”. FABULOUS, VIRTUALLY UNOBTAINABLE VOLUME FROM THE LIBRARY OF THOMAS EDISON GIFTED TO HIM BY THE AUTHOR GEORGE STERLING Sterling has also annotated inside the book on the table of contents and on the page featuring “The Light-Giver”, a poem referencing “Great Edison” and his invention of the light bulb. The poem reads in full: “‘Let there be light!’ said One. And from the ancient gulf of darkness strode, Harnessed and swift for their immortal road, The horses of the sun. And you are child of Him, Great Edison, for whose creative hands The night is less on all the seas and lands, And day itself less dim. At evening from this hill Gaze forth, and see the stars that you have lit—The human constellations that transmit The message of man’s will.”. The book is in fine condition with minor rubbing to the boards, foxing to the endpapers, and the front endpapers slightly torn down the middle. In addition, the book contains various library markings from the defunct Upsala College of East Orange, New Jersey, which was nearby Edison’s West Orange home and laboratory. The volume and inscription has been authenticated by RR Auction, the leading autograph auction house in the world, and is accompanied with documentation. STERLING ANNOTATES HIS POEM “THE LIGHT-GIVER” THAT BOASTS ON EDISON’S MOST FAMOUS INVENTION A fabulous, virtually unobtainable copy of a book from Edison’s personal library which boasts a direct connection to his most famous invention. We were only able to locate one other volume owned by Edison available for sale at auction in the past 25 years and it sold for $1,750 at O’Gallerie Auctioneers in July of 2001.
