Original limp vellum binding, gilt titling on spine, all four green silk ties present and intact. Edges untrimmed. First two leaves of the original manuscript (Florence 1496) reproduced in collotype facsimile prior to the text. Printed in black and red in Subiaco type on handmade paper with several woodcut initial letters designed by Graily Hewitt in aqua blue. Introduction by Seton in English, text in Italian. CONDITION: Vellum binding clean and lustrous - the variation in color (light brown tones) is intrinsic to the vellum and is normal. Gilt titling on spine and all four silk ties intact. Leather ex-libris inside front cover with strong offset to opposite page and a 2nd colorful ex-libris on the blank page opposite the title page (see photos). Text pages are exceptionally clean and bright, in very fine condition. DISCUSSION: This is a rare vernacular Italian biography of St.Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis, hand written by Ugolino Verino (1438-1516) who presented it to the Sisters of the Santa Chiara Novella convent in Florence in 1496. As noted by critic and expert Colin Franklin, this ranks as a serious critical edition as well as an exceptional piece of printing (see macro photos) by the Ashendene Press.
