Description: Vintage Victorian 1870-1874 Brown Wool Bodice And Skirt. Please note: vintage clothing is used clothing and sold as is. I found this ensemble, along with a green silk and deep royal purple basque Bodice. They came from an auction from a local museum. I do not know the museum name. Tags were pinned to each garment with an ID number. These two lovely pieces are machine and hand stitched out fine medium weight wool in a "mottled" brown squiggle pattern over a lighter brown background. Bodice is a "soft bodice", no boning. Fine seams. Lined in light brown cotton fabric. This is a Winter garment. Superb feminine early 1870s bodice showing the waistline and hips. This is a Curaiss bodice. Fitted, highly tailored with piped neckline and Armcyces. Trimmed in solid brown cotton edging for a high-end appearance. Long curved sleeves, which still depict the late 1860s fashion period. There is a large pleated trimmed ruffle over the curved sleeve. Edge of under sleeve trimmed in brown fabric. More attention went into styling the bodice than the skirt. Long sweet tails adorn the lower back bodice with a large bow above the tails. Hand stitched button holes. Buttons are plastic and are from the 1940s period. I recommend removing and add brown metal fancy buttons instead. The lower ruffle wraps all around the lower bodice, front and back. Armcyces show medium perspiration stains, which most likely darkened from age. Stored away out of light and dust. Some seam stitches have come loose from age, and thread deteriorates over time. Bodice has some small areas where there is a small hole, one in one sleeve ruffle, and the other ruffle has some scattered pinholes all together in one area. Some brown edging has come loose. Please note: I do my absolute best to find and catch every flaw. My eyes aren't the greatest anymore, and I live in a very old vintage home where lighting is very poor. Bodice has a tiny pocket, see photo, on the inside waist area. The bodice is clean and very well made and heavy. No huge rips or stains. Bust 34, waist 24, shoulders 17, sleeves 18, shoulder to hem front 23, shoulder to hem back 27, large bow measures 7" wide, ruffles 3". Skirt measures waist 29", and 1" tab where hook and eye closures are joined when worn over a petticoat and bustle, total waistline 30". The tab allows room by 1" for a snug closure. Waistband 1", front length 36-1/2", back length 37-1/2". This is an "Eliptical" or "Oval" skirt going into the early feminine and romantic 1870s fashion era. The skirt is simple in its construction. No trims or ruffles. The skirt is not lined. Only the bottom inside is lined with cocoa colored polished brown cotton to give "weight" to the skirt so it hangs properly. This measures 12". Cotton is in good condition. Clean with no rips. The skirt is pleated at the upper back with a placket down the center. The pleated area allows for the skirt to fit and lay upon a bustle hoop. The waistband has hook and eye closure. Two patched areas. The wearer patched on the "inside" of the skirt to hide flaws. I did not even see them in bright light she was that good at hiding them. Skirts took much more wear and tear than bodice and blouses did. There are areas with scattered pinholes, one at center front of skirt along with a darker stain. Some larger holes on the under side where the hemline is turned up. The mottled muted pattern hides most all flaws. No huge rips. Waistband needs attention since alot of stress is put upon fabric with heavy underskirts and petticoats, plus wool is a natural fiber and deteriorates with age. Wonderful garment for display. Bodice and skirt as is. I am downsizing some of my vintage pieces. All sales final. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. Thank you.
