It was handmade and hand-decorated in Venice, Italy. It was purchased in Venice when a friend's late wife visited Italy with her sister in the 1990's. "Venetian Masks" are made from papier (or paper) maché, coated in a fine plaster cast to give them strength and then hand decorated using the finest of paints, fabrics, feathers, gems and glitters. The paper maché is either layered, in the old fashioned way, in a mould taken from a human face or, using more modern-day techniques, the paper maché is pulped with a glue substance and then pushed into the mould and left to set. Most masks are unisex and traditionally, the more feminine masks were worn by men, and masculine masks were worn by women to disguise the wearer's identity. Authentic and original Venetian masks are totally handcrafted in the city of Venice by the famous masters. Every single step of this fascinating work is entirely handmade. It can require from hours to weeks to be finished and they 100 percent made in Italy. Traditional Carnival Masks can be worn or hung on the wall as decorations.
