Description: For your consideration, The “Jolly Sailor” made as a promotional advertisement for the Seamen’s Bank for savings NYC, NY. First opened on Wall Street in the 1800s. Frank and Margie Goss started a pottery in Chatham, New Jersey in 1941. In the 1940’s and 1950’s they used various “Goss Stoneware” marks and labels, and also marketed their product under the name “Contemporary Ceramics” at their 32 Watchung Ave., Chatham, NJ address. In 1964 the company was incorporated under the name of Chatham Potters, Inc. Costas Kalogirou, plant manager, bought the company in 1967. Costas Kalogirou (owner of Chatham Potters) says that the Seamen’s bank with the Contemporary Ceramics metal turning plate was a Frank Goss design. Goss had the McCoy Pottery company make the banks for him to his specifications. Thanks to fabulous Mr. Kalogirou this information is now in the public domain. Plus, everyone else who is selling one of these on eBay can borrow this information from my listing. General condition: NEAR MINT. Some crazing lines that are really unavoidable with vintage pottery. Also the metal plate that turns at the bottom of the bank is missing. Other than that I would write this as a find collectible, and handsome Coin bank that was first introduced in the 40s presumably. It’s hard to know actually, the exact date McCoy started producing Frank Goss innovative designs. It’s safe to say this particular copy was produced in the late 50s into the 1960s.
