He easily defeated William Jennnings Bryan for the Presidency. Taft spent much of his presidency focused on East Asia and repeatedly intervened to either prop up or remove Latin American governments. He also was focused on a reduction of trade tariffs. During his presidency, the rift between the conservative and progressive Republicans grew, which eventually led to Theodore Roosevelt winning the nomination in 1912. Later, in 1921, Taft was appointed to the Supreme Court and became the Chief Justice. He is the only person to ever hold both those offices.
