Your spring loaded vintage Singer Embroidery & Quilting Foot is in very good vintage condition. It has been inspected, cleaned and oiled. I do not see any sign of damage from corrosion. The internal spring compresses and releases smoothly. The screw head has been damaged by being forced to turn. It will still function to secure the embroidery attachment to the sewing machine presser bar using a flat head screwdriver. Notice the foot of the embroidery attachments "eye" is wide to accommodate a zigzag stitch during embroidery or quilting. Imagine the fun you can have using the double needle option your Singer 400 or 500 series machine offers and your embroidery and quilting foot! Instructions are in the manual. Let's play!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~NOTE: I do not have a vintage zigzag Singer slant shank sewing machine to illustrate and demonstrate this specific embroidery and quilting attachment. Archive photos of spring loaded attachments such as the side attaching low shank darning and embroidery foot for the Singer 221 and the Singer 301 slant shank darning and embroidery attachment (which are not for sale in this listing) are used to illustrate and demonstrate the features of this type of spring loaded darning, embroidery and quilting attachment. The attachments used in the illustrations below operate in the same exact way mechanically as the Singer 161161 attachment foot. Just like the Singer side attaching low shank spring loaded darning foot, the slant shank Singer 161161 quilting/embroidery foot is driven by the up and down movement of the needle clamp which is attached to the needle bar of your vintage Singer ZigZag Sewing Machine. The cylinder of this type of Singer embroidery foot (bottom red arrow in the picture below) slides inside the shaft and is controlled by the internal spring. This spring is what holds the eye of the foot against the fabric as the needle bar lowers. If the internal workings of the embroidery foot are corroded/rusted through neglect, the attachment may be frozen in place and not operate. The shaft and surrounding cylinder must be able to move fluidly and rapidly just like the piston in a car motor. As the needle bar raises up against the little arm (top red arrow in the picture below), the internal spring inside the shaft releases the pressure on the eye of the foot to allow you to move your work easily under the moving needle as you enjoy free motion embroidery or quilting. Let's look at some features.By raising the presser bar lever and lifting this long arm at the side with your finger (top blue arrow), the internal spring will compress and lift the foot over your sewing machine embroidery hoop edge (bottom blue arrow). This allows you to easily remove and adjust your work without having to remove the foot from your sewing machine. The foot will hop over the edge of a low profile sewing machine embroidery hoop. Having the correct attaching screw is important. I tried using my standard vintage Singer thumb screw to attach my low shank Singer embroidery foot. The embroidery foot did not sit snugly against the presser bar. Because the embroidery foot wasn't secured, it wobbled. The correct screw is longer and specially designed to go in from the left of the presser bar, through and into the curved side of the embroidery attachment which is attached to the right of the presser bar (green arrows). No other screw will work this way for this type of Singer embroidery attachment. The instruction manual is very easy to read and understand. The steps for setting up your sewing machine are easy to follow. Remember to set the throat plate lever position of your sewing machine in the "UP" position. A drop of good sewing machine oil should be applied to the spring barrel and to the screw thread before storing your precious foot. Coffee filter paper makes a good wrap and oil soaker. ~ Like my comments? They are included!
