Description: A unique opportunity to own a rare & unusual Vintage Siebe Gorman Co. Firefighters Foot Bellows Horn Alarm/Air Pump. Condition is "Used". Would make a super cool & interesting gift for your firefighter. This piece has been in our shop and is quite the conversation starter. This is a refurbished English Fire Siren. Around 1850, the basic unit (no horn) was developed as a double bellows air pump providing air to a firefighter's smoke helmet. The foot pedal was depressed to pump air into a second spring tensioned bellows, to keep a constant flow of air to the helmet. When a firefighter went into a confined area, they had a lifeline attached & used a code based on pulls of the lifeline to communicate with the pump operator. In the early 1900's, more efficient air pumps were developed, so the company adapted a large brass horn & marketed the pump as a fire siren. The unit measures 17.5" long x 9" wide x 24" high, & weighs 25 lbs GORMAN & CO. LTD. LONDON SIE. In 1830, one of the owners (Augustus Siebe) invented the first deep sea diving helmet in 1830 & also owned the patent for the first smoke helmet. This rare & unusual item is a prime example of innovative British craftsmanship. The horn is in very good, working condition. I have not found any cracks or splits in the bellows leather. There are no cracks or splits in the wood base. There are some polish marks I noticed after cleaning, please see photos. Does not diminish the value. (photo #10) I've seen these on ebay before, but none in as good condition as this one is. "Pick up only" due to size & weight. If shipping is needed, we can discuss this before the auction has ended.
