Samuel Dashiell Hammett was an American author of crime and detective novels, screenwriter, and political activist born on May 27, 1894, in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Some of his best-known novels are "Red Harvest", "The Dain Curse", "The Maltese Falcon", "The Glass Key", and "The Thin Man". Hammett served in World War I and World War II. He had several jobs including messenger boy, newsboy, clerk, timekeeper, yardman, machine operator and stevedore- until he became an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. His experiences as a private detective laid the foundations for his writing career. Hammett wrote over 80 short stories, mostly published in "Black Mask" magazine. His first story was published in 1922 in "The Smart Set" magazine. Hammett wrote a daily comic strip, "Secret Agent X-9", for King Features Syndicate. Hammett wrote the screenplay for "Watch on the Rhine" in 1943. This archive includes manuscripts and personal correspondence. The Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections at the University of South Carolina holds the Dashiell Hammett family papers.
