Description: Exceptional Vintage NW Coastal Indian, probably Tlingit, Handmade Button-Style Applique Crib Quilt with Thunderbird This outstanding and graphic crib quilt is probably from Southeastern Alaska, made during the last 30 years, and likely made by a member of a number of possible Northwest Coast Tribes including, the Tlingit, Haida, Tshimshian, or Kwakiutl. The central red & black applique panel is hand stitched while machine stitching was employed to attach the panel to the black backing and borders. The fabrics appear to be a medium weight cotton and the buttons are a mixture of white and slightly opalescent buttons simulating the handmade Chinese shell buttons that were popular with Native makers from 1880-1920. There appears to be a thin batting between front and back giving a slightly stuffed appearance. The Thunderbird design of this piece is graphically powerful and strongly proclaims the culture of both the maker and the recipient. I believe this quilt was created by a Grandmother who had in mind the protective powers the Thunderbird brings to a newborn. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: 29" high x 26 1/2" wide
