On the front of this rare oval-shaped pendant, it reads “plus (+) qu’hier moins (-) que demain.” This verse was taken from Rosemonde Gérard’s poem, “Les Vieux,” which she wrote to her husband, Edmond Rostand, as a declaration of her love in 1889: “Car, vois-tu, chaque jour je t’aimedavantage,Aujourd’hui plus qu’hier et bien moins que demain.” (For, you see, each day I love you more,Today more than yesterday and much less than tomorrow.) This verse represents everlasting love. Alphonse Augis, grandson of Maison Augis’s founder, had the idea of making a love medal with a portion of the verse engraved. In 1907, Maison Augis in Lyon, France, created la “Médaille d’Amour.” - This pendant is crafted in solid 18k yellow gold. It would make a lovely gift for yourself or a loved one. Note: The eagle head hallmark has faded and is not as crisp - Maker’s mark: [] for Maison Augis On the front of the pendant:- Signed: [A.A] for Alphonse Augis On the back of the pendant:- Stamped: [DÉPOSÉ] to indicate the design is registered or copyrighted in France INSCRIPTION- n/a GEMSTONESDiamond:- One (1) round single-cut natural diamond in the “+” sign Rubies:- Two (2) baguette-cut synthetic/calibrated rubies in the “-” sign MEASUREMENTS- Length: Approx. 17.4 mm (not including the larger bail) to 22.2 mm (including the larger bail)- Width: Approx. 11.8 mm- Depth: Approx. 1.4 mm (centre of the pendant)- Weight: Approx. 1.8 grams - Opening of the larger bail: Approx. 4.0 mm in length x 5.0 mm in width CONDITION - Overall, the pendant is in beautiful vintage condition but bears signs of wear commensurate with age and use. Metal surfaces have marks and scratches that one would expect in a piece of this age. These ‘imperfections’ add character to the piece rather than take away from it- This pendant has a beautiful patina- On the back of the pendant, there is wear on the metal surfaces (shown under 10x magnification in image 20)- The diamond and synthetic ruby on the left are firmly set with no visible chips or cracks. Note: There is a loss to the synthetic ruby on the right (located on top and the left-hand side). I have shown this under 10x magnification in image 19- The smaller bail sits at an angle (vs. being flat).
