Description: Here’s a truly rare find, a set of 11” & 15” Ludwig & Ludwig WWII era Victory toms, with tunable batter heads and tacked-on (non-tunable) bottom heads. They’re in good condition, especially considering their age! To my knowledge, both are all original, with wooden lugs & hoops, Marine Pearl covering, and all calfskin heads intact! The 11” tom includes a mounting bracket, but I don’t have the basket for the 15” tom. All heads have maintained tension since I’ve owned the drums (though calfskin head tension will vary a bit with changes in humidity & temperature). As the pics show, there are slight cracks in the 15” drum’s hoop (pic #8, at 9:00 o’clock), and more significant cracks in the 11” hoop (pic #4, at 10:30 o’clock). I believe both can be repaired by someone with proper woodworking skills. The hoop cracks are the only structural issues I’m aware of. Other than that, there are various scuffs, marks & discolorations from the previous owner(s) — please check the pics carefully, as they are part of the description. For a while I thought about a restoration attempt myself, but didn’t want to risk doing more harm than good. So, they’ve remained exactly as I found ‘em 40+ years ago, never taken apart or messed with. They sound warm as expected, though I’ve only played them lightly on a few occasions, being careful with the calfskin heads. Some backstory I’ve discovered along the way: During the war effort of the 1940s, the U.S. Government issued “General Limitation Order L-37”, which ordered musical instrument companies to limit the use of critical materials (in this case metal) to no more than 10% of their total weight. Ludwig & Ludwig’s response was to build their drums with hardwood lugs, three ply shells, maple hoops, and wooden stands. As much as I admire these old drums, it’s time for someone else to enjoy them, and hopefully even do a proper restoration! I’ve priced them reasonably to help offset the buyer's shipping cost — they don’t weigh that much, but the box will be large, so will incur “dimensional weight” charges. They will ship encased in bubble wrap, with heavy cardboard protecting the heads. I pack all my items very carefully and ship quickly — check my feedback. Please contact me if you have any questions!
